Simplified Proofreaders
Simplified Proofreaders (SP) is a website to enable the proofreading of text by matching scanned images of a page with text generated by optical character recognition (OCR) software. It unashamedly borrows its concept from Distributed Proofreaders. If you want to volunteer as a proofreader and contribute to their mission of providing books for Project Gutenberg please go directly to Distributed Proofreaders.
What SP can be used for
- Proofread text as the basis of publishing public domain ebooks
- Practise proofreading to hone employment skills.
- Edit text matched to original manuscripts.
- Input copy from an original.
How to start
Interested in trying out the proofreading interface? Sign up now
Go the real Distributed Proofreaders site or find an ebook for free download at Project Gutenberg or Project Gutenberg Australia.
Why use SP
SP was developed as an assignment for the Diploma in Web Development at Broken Hill College of TAFE. It enables a proofreading interface similar to Distributed Proofreaders but does not restrict use to the preparation of ebooks.
Submit your own project
If you have a project of your own you want to upload and use, whether a full book or just a few pages to practise proofreading, contact the SP helpdesk to discuss your requirements. You will need a scanned image of each page you want to proofread and a file for the associated text. If you want to use the project as an exercise to input text, the text files do not need to contain any actual text.
